As a Special Educator for the moderate to severely disabled, I view my primary role as breaking down the barriers that separate students from students, students from staff, and students from the community at large.  I firmly believe that, with minor perspective adjustments, the commonality that is shared by all people quickly and powerfully dwarfs any differences, whether they be varied cognitive abilities, physical impairments, language deficits, racial or ethnic differences, etc.

Secondly, my focus for each student I serve is that their potential for independence be maximized.  Toward this  end, individualized goals are designed and implemented, whether in the self-contained classroom for direct or small group instruction, in general ed. classes with supports as needed, or in the community where functional life skills are taught, practiced, and applied to everyday settings
