Every homeroom has library class once a week for 47 minutes. For all grade levels, the class period is split into two parts: projects and book selection. For the younger students, the projects entail listening to stories that I read aloud and doing a corresponding activity. Many of the themes tie into classroom units. As the students get older, the projects involve more research and library skills, such as using our online card catalog, accessing online and print reference materials, and locating and evaluating books independently. By the time students are in 6th grade, they do in-depth research projects during library class, mostly tied to their social studies curriculum.

During book selection time at the end of each class, students check out books to bring home. Books can be kept out for one week and can be renewed as many times as needed, but the children must bring them to the library to renew them.

The amount of books that students can take out depends on what grade they are in. The guidelines are as follows:

Grades K and 1: One book

Grades 2 and 3: Two books

Grades 4, 5, and 6: Three books

Grades 1-6 may also take out one magazine per week.
